Migrant Education Day

Migrant Education Day, coined “College for a Day”, is a program hosted by University Outreach at CSU Channel Islands (CI) designed to serve our local migrant community from surrounding school districts. This program supports the countywide P-16 initiative to promote a college-going culture in Ventura County.  Hundreds of 3rd – 8th grade migrant students and their parents have been served by CI students, staff and faculty through this successful program over the past four years.

College for a Day Availability and Application Process:

Due to the growing interest in College for a Day, Ventura County migrant programs can apply to take advantage of this exciting university experience.  One migrant program will be selected to participate in College for a Day scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 6, 2010.  Your migrant program must be available to participate on the aforementioned date.  The application process will occur as follows:

  • Monday, September 13, 2010: College for a Day Applications will be available on the University Outreach website (www.csuci.edu/universityoutreach).
  • Thursday, September 30, 2010:  Applications due by 5:00 p.m. to university.outreach@csuci.edu or by fax to (805) 437-3211, Attn: University Outreach.
  • Friday, October 1, 2010:  Selection Committee convenes, reviews complete applications and selects one migrant program.
  • Monday, October 4, 2010:  Notifications submitted via email;  the final candidate will receive a phone call and an email.

College for a Day Expectations:

Because University Outreach staff wants to provide the best possible university experience for your students and their parents, it is vital that we have ample time to prepare for this event.  The following expectations guide our planning process.

  • Total Number of Participants: If your program is selected you may bring as many as 200 3rd through 8th grade students, and no more than 50 parents to participate.  Also, you will be required to bring eight chaperones who will accompany students and parents in their breakout groups.  A final count of students and parents is required one month prior to the event.
  • Migrant Parent Meetings: The University Outreach staff has learned the best way to gain parent support and increase student and parent attendance is to present and connect with parents at migrant parent meetings.  If your program is selected, we ask that you provide the University Outreach staff two opportunities to promote the event to the families.
  • Parking/Refreshments:  Because the program is only 4.5 hours, it is pertinent to arrive on-time.  Arrival locations and bus parking is arranged once your program is confirmed.  Additionally, one snack and one water bottle are provided for each of your guests.  Please be aware that if you would like to provide additional snacks for your participants you must arrange a drop off of these items 48 hours in advance of the event.

To apply for your chance to take part in College for a Day, please adhere to the following application process:

Step 1:  Familiarize yourself with the College for a Day overview, availability and application process and expectations.

Step 2:  Download and fill out an application form expressing why your migrant program should be selected to participate in Fall 2010.  The form is in Microsoft Word format, so you can save your completed document to your desktop and email it to university.outreach@csuci.edu.  Or, if you prefer, you can complete the form and fax it to University Outreach at (805) 437-3211, Attn: University Outreach.

  • College for a Day Application, Fall 2010 (MS Word, 181KB)  **Upon opening the application, please select "Save" and save to your computer.  Once you have saved the application, open and complete it.  If you choose "Open" rather than "Save," you may encounter an error message.

Step 3:  Allow two business days for a confirmation noting receipt of your application from Vanessa Mendoza, University Outreach counselor.

Step 4:  Wait until Monday, October 4, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. for application results via email.

Super Sunday

Super Sunday is an event coordinated by the CSU in both Northern and Southern California churches. In an effort to increase access to higher education, each CSU campus is assigned an AME church in California with the aim to inform African-American students about the college preparation and admissions process.  The day consists of a presentation by CI’s president, Dr. Richard R. Rush, or vice president for Student Affairs, Dr. Wm. Gregory Sawyer, followed by a tabling session conducted by Admissions and Recruitment staff and University Outreach student volunteers.
