CSU Channel Islands (CI) has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This university-wide distinction is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.
Seven hundred institutions of higher learning were named to the Honor Roll for exemplary service to America’s communities. The award recipients were announced by the Corporation for National and Community Service, in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.
CSUCI is dedicated to providing students with experiential and service learning experiences. Service learning is a teaching and learning method that links course content to "real-life" experiences that centers around a community need or issue. Through reflection activities students are given the opportunity to understand what was learned and experienced, and how the community was benefited.
Service learning and experiential learning can provide opportunities that reflect a community interest; however, service learning has certain characterizing elements that differentiates it from other forms of experiential learning (e.g., internships).
